Alluring Alteration

This charming 3 bedroom 3 bath home always had a fantastic shell – fun fact, it was scouted as a filming location for Hocus Pocus 2 – but the floor plan was disorganized and required a complete readjustment to transform the home into a space designed for living life well. As the home is settled neatly in an historic neighborhood, the interior alterations reflect the beauty and polish of its exterior, with a nod to its historic roots, while still bringing modern utility and design to the space. With some rearranging of the existing spaces, the kitchen, dining room, and living room – the triumvirate which comprises the heart of the home – were brought together into a cohesive main living area. The new layout allows for better flow within the home, the design elements of each space transitioning smoothly between them. In addition to creating a main gathering space, the homeowners wanted to make the home suitable for hosting friends and family overnight. They challenged the architect to find room for a 4th bedroom, but it would have been a tight squeeze; the solution was to design a lofted swing space providing the homeowners with additional area that can convert into a spare bedroom if needed. A lack of natural light in the interior of the home made for a dim and gloomy atmosphere. The reconfigured layout was designed to optimize the amount of light that entered from the existing exterior windows. In the kitchen, an added window and new doorway connection to the backyard bring in even more light. In the harder-to-reach center of the home, a clerestory section above brightens the halls.
