New England Brick
The house grew from the Owner’s request for a house that echoed the scale and design elements of some of the other “Banker’s Tudors” built along the same grand boulevard in Providence. The brick facing was selected to help evoke this feeling and scale. It has a great sense of solidity and presence. The strong texture of the Stiles and Hart brick gives the structure great life as the sun swings around the different facades.
Strong axial paths were developed to pull the family outside the house into the garden. Numerous elements soften the boundaries between inside and outside. The same architectural language used formally on the front face is used much more playfully on the interior court yard. In the back, the terrace walls that step with the grade help define outdoor rooms.
