About BTGA

Brewster Thornton Group Architects, LLP (BTGA) was founded in 1989, with a paramount commitment to the professional client relationship - one in which we lend our expertise as advisors to your building process. Our buildings, or "end products," reflect our client's goals, not the designer's, but are still supported by excellent design skills and thorough, thoughtful project administration. We strive to be active problem-solvers, diplomatic advisors, speedy facilitators, and careful listeners.

BTGA was founded in support of an architectural practice model that speaks to creating “useful” architecture – beautiful, functional, efficient, reusable, and humanitarian in its outlook.  We enjoy the challenge of a tightly constrained renovation problem, and have successfully completed over 61 such projects of various sizes.  Specialists in the adaptive reuse of historic structures, BTGA also has a large practice in the addition and renovation of historic homes.

Projects have ranged from the transformation of a derelict carriage barn into a high-end custom residence for a Providence couple which was the 1996 winner of Providence Preservation Society Award for Adaptive Reuse, to the renovation of 4 two-family historic buildings on adjacent properties and relocation of an additional 1840s house to a vacant lot 8 blocks away. All of these buildings included fully upgraded interiors with new systems, services and finishes, while restoring their historic exteriors, and the project was awarded a 2005 Historic Preservation Award from the Providence Preservation Society.  Additional projects have included a 19th century stucco restoration and addition on the East Side that was featured in Traditional Home(??), an updated lakeside "cottage" that was featured in Builder Magazine, and a "New Craftsman" residence that was the winner of the 2002 Builder's Choice Grand Award for Best Custom Home under 3,500 SF.

More information on these and other projects is included in our Projects section.
