CHASE FARM MUSEUM, LINCOLN RI – In 2005, Ms. Thornton was retained to prepare a feasibility report for use of the Chase Homestead as a demonstration dairy farm museum. Her work included an assessment of the existing 1890 wood structure and systems, review of applicable zoning, building, and fire codes, development of a museum program with the project organizers, and a schematic renovation design to create the new museum. These materials are currently being used to raise funds for the building’s transformation.
GREATER PROVIDENCE YMCA – Ms. Brewster renovated executive administration area, including President’s office, Boardroom, and staff office spaces. Also completed a project for them that included floor plan layouts and developing drawings for the new Childcare facility on Broad Street in Providence.
TRI-TOWN COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY - At present we have worked on three separate Head Start facilities as follows:
- Design and construction documents for a 3500 square foot state-of-the-art Head Start daycare facility in Johnston. Responsible for all phases of the design, including consultations on renovations to the remainder of the new building the agency had purchased.
- Renovation of existing Head Start and Early Start facility in historic downtown Pascoag. The design was developed with the program director to create a lively and stimulating space while maintaining some of the residential character and scale of the existing spaces. Services include documentation of existing conditions, evaluation of all applicable codes and regulations, design and construction documents and construction administration of the contract.
- Conversion of an existing commercial space into a new Head Start and Early Start facility. Service started with a feasibility study of the building and site prior to purchase. At the start of the project the entire property was evaluated with regards to zoning, building type, use group, historic district, local and state Fire Marshall, and federal Head Start representatives. The proposed renovations and additions have resulted in classrooms and an attached outdoor play area, which provides a safe and stimulating environment.
DCYF - Consulting architects for the daycare renovation of the building purchased on Elmwood Avenue in Providence. Our services included evaluation of proposed design with regards to applicable codes and regulations. The facility was to be operated by the Providence YMCA under contract to the Department of Children Youth and Families for their own staff at their new office facilities.
PROVIDENCE HOUSING AUTHORITY - Designed both a 24-child and an 80-child Early and Head Start facility for the PHA as part of a larger community center project. We advised the owner to work with LISC to develop the program and scope of the facility. We met with LISC and the owner, and completed the facility design. At present, they are seeking funding and completing financial feasibility studies.
FRIENDS HOUSE DAYCARE - Consultation on addition of a new entry area, handicapped ramp, and “facelift” for construction by volunteers. Developed a design, which met all applicable codes and regulations while working within the modest budget constraints of the Owner.
PAWTUCKET BOYS & GIRLS CLUB - Ms. Thornton designed the interiors of this new gymnasium/Multi-purpose facility attached to an existing pool, while at RGB, and continued as design architect through the construction phase of this School Street project. Her interiors were awarded the 1988 Award for Excellence from the NE Concrete Masonry Association.
